Steel Roller Shutters
One of the most cost-effective solutions to securing your premises, our galvanised steel roller shutters can be used for a wide variety of applications.
Galvanised steel shutters are typically found on retail units, warehouses, factories or shop fronts. They are also sometimes used in residential garages, but our range of aluminium shutters may be better suited for such purposes due to their aesthetics.
Our standard steel curtain is made from 22swg galvanised steel which offers adequate security for most applications but can be upgraded to 20swg or 18swg for added thickness if required.
The galvanised finish generally protects against rust but can be powder-coated or plastisol coated for added protection.
Perforated or punched steel options are available if you need airflow or visibility into the premises.

Although galvanised steel roller shutters are generally the most affordable type of roller shutter you can get, they don’t compromise on security. Their rigid nature makes it difficult for opportunists to break in easily.
If you are concerned about security, you can upgrade the thickness of steel, or check our specially designed high security steel shutters.

Our steel roller shutters can be operated manually or via a single phase or 3-phase motor depending on the size and anticipated usage.
If you opt for an electric model, shutters can be controlled via key switches, rocker switches, remote controls, smart phones on any other existing system you may have.
All our steel roller shutters come with a 12 month warranty.
FAQs
What are the advantages of steel roller shutters?
Steel roller shutters offer strong security and are incredibly robust. If insulated, they provide thermal properties and noise reduction, but insulation is an optional extra. They are harder-wearing than aluminium, meaning they are more resistant to scratches and dents. Steel shutters also come galvanized as standard, and you can opt for powder coating or plastic coating for additional protection, especially in marine environments. Additionally, they are often the most cost-effective material for most applications, making them cheaper than aluminium in many cases.
What are the disadvantages of steel roller shutters?
Steel roller shutters are heavier than aluminium, making manual operation challenging and requiring more powerful motors for automation, which increases costs and power consumption. They are also more prone to rust in their raw form, although galvanization and powder coating can mitigate this issue. Aesthetically, steel shutters tend to have a more industrial appearance, making them less suitable for high-end commercial or domestic settings. Another drawback is that they tend to rattle more in the wind compared to aluminium shutters, which might be undesirable in quieter environments.
Is steel the best material for rolling shutters?
The best material depends on the intended use. Aluminium is lighter, naturally more corrosion-resistant, and generally more aesthetically pleasing, making it a better choice for domestic or commercial applications where appearance matters. Steel, being heavier and more industrial, can span wider openings, making it ideal for warehouses and industrial settings. It is also the more cost-effective option for budget-conscious buyers.
What is the alternative to steel roller shutters?
Alternatives to steel roller shutters include aluminium shutters (lighter and more corrosion-resistant), polycarbonate shutters (transparent and stylish), and security grilles (offering visibility and ventilation). Each option has its own strengths depending on the setting and required security level.
How hard is it to break into steel roller shutters?
Steel roller shutters come in different security strengths. The standard lath is 22-gauge steel (measured in SWG), which provides low-to-mild security and is commonly used on high street shops. For enhanced protection, thicker steel options such as 20-gauge or 18-gauge are available, making break-ins significantly harder. Security-rated roller shutters, known as the LPS 1175 range, are available from Level 1 to Level 5. Level 1 provides resistance to common tools for a guaranteed time, while Level 5 is designed to withstand extreme attacks, including explosions.
Are steel roller shutters burglar-proof?
Nothing is completely burglar-proof, but steel roller shutters are highly effective at deterring burglars. With strong materials, secure locking mechanisms, and various security grades available, they provide an excellent level of protection and peace of mind.
What is the average cost of a steel roller shutter door?
The average cost of a steel roller shutter door typically ranges from £950 to £2,000 or more, depending on factors such as size, design, and additional features like insulation or motorised operation. For a more accurate quote, it’s best to consult your supplier based on your specific needs and measurements
Are steel roller shutters worth it?
Yes, steel roller shutters are a cost-effective solution for securing a store or warehouse. They can help reduce insurance premiums, deter burglars, and provide excellent protection, making them a worthwhile investment.
Do steel roller shutters add value?
Yes, steel roller shutters add value by enhancing security, energy efficiency, and noise reduction. They make properties more appealing to buyers or tenants, offering long-term savings and increased comfort.
When should steel roller shutters not be used?
Steel roller shutters may not be ideal for settings prioritising aesthetics, lightweight structures that cannot support their weight, or environments with extremely corrosive conditions where alternative materials may be preferable.
Can you install steel roller shutters yourself?
While DIY installation of steel roller shutters is possible, it is best handled by professionals to ensure proper functionality, safety, and longevity. Errors during installation can compromise security and result in costly repairs.
How long do steel roller shutters last?
Steel roller shutters can last anywhere between 20 and 50 years with proper maintenance, including regular cleaning, lubrication, and timely repairs. High-quality materials and diligent care ensure long-lasting performance.
How often should steel roller shutter doors be serviced?
Steel roller shutters should be serviced annually, or every six months for frequent use, to maintain optimal performance and safety. Regular servicing addresses wear and extends their lifespan.
Is it a legal requirement to have steel roller shutters serviced?
Yes, it is a legal requirement under the Health and Safety at Work Act, which mandates that electric shutters must be serviced annually for compliance.

What is the best colour for steel roller shutters?
The best colour for steel roller shutters depends on your preferences and environment. Neutral tones such as white, grey, or beige are versatile and blend well with most exteriors, while darker shades like black or charcoal provide a sleek, modern look. Consider lighter colours for heat reflection in sunny areas and coatings that resist fading for long-lasting appeal.
Do steel roller shutters stop condensation?
Steel roller shutters aid in insulation if they are insulated, and rubber seals and brushes along the edges can help prevent moisture ingress. However, proper ventilation is still required to manage condensation effectively.
Which is the best steel rolling shutter?
The best steel rolling shutter depends on your needs. Galvanised steel is ideal for durability and corrosion resistance, while heavier gauge options provide enhanced security. Powder-coated finishes add style and extra protection. Choose a shutter tailored to your security, insulation, or aesthetic requirements
