What are fire roller shutters?

Fire roller shutters are a cost-effective way of securing an opening to reduce the spread of flames and smoke if a fire breaks out in your premises. Fire shutters can be used for both industrial and commercial buildings where the risk and possibility of fire is increased.

Fire shutters are a great solution to sectioning areas of a factory or warehouse off so that if a machine or materials catch fire only one part of the building will be affected. Fire roller shutters give emergency services more time to respond before the condition of the building deteriorates dramatically.

Fire shutters have a range of practical benefits that make them appealing to manufacturing businesses:

  • Compartmentalise the spread of fire
  • Offers sound reduction
  • Can provide radiant heat protection

UK Roller Shutters fire rated shutters can be fitted to any shaped or sized aperture. The fire shutters are made to measure and come in a range of colours with the option to upgrade to RAL colour powder coating.

  • Manufactured from steel & synthetic material for insulation
  • Lessens damage to a building
  • Combines both radiant heat protection with fire integrity

Twin skin fire roller shutters

Our twin skin steel shutters are the most effective way to secure an opening and/or compartmentalise against a spreading fire. Unlike single skin fire shutters, this model provides incredible radiant heat protection. To put this into perspective, normally if a fire was raging at 1200°C on the other side of a standard fire shutter you wouldn’t be able to stand within 6 metres of the opening. However, due to the FR-INS4H’s unique construction, the radiant heat levels around the roller shutter door drop from 65kw sq metre to an incredible 2.7 kw sq metre. The FR-INS4H also offers a 20dB sound reduction value meaning they are good to use in kitchens where the room next door may also used for meetings or exhibitions.

These fire-rated doors are fitted with safety brakes, coupled with ‘drive ratio control’, in order to manage controlled descents. Furthermore, we can incorporate one of our interface panels so that the roller shutter closes automatically when the fire alarm is set off.

The curtain is normally constructed from laths comprising a synthetic material outer skin bonded to a special inner core consisting of high-performance insulation materials. Stainless steel cables connected the laths together and are fastened to the roller at the head. The bottom rail comprises a standard lath fitted with an extruded PVC bottom seal.

Manufactured from galvanised steel and shaped into a channel profile which is prepared for bolting to the structure by means of continuous fixing angles.

Manufactured from galvanised steel of adequate thickness relative to door size and supplied with steel plates for fixing to the structure.

A combination of galvanised steel and ‘u’ profile and MDF board with a special fire protection cover fastened to the lintel into which the top of the door engages providing an effective seal against the passage of flames and hot gasses.

The barrel comprises a steel tube of suitable diameter and wall thickness to avoid deflection. Steel shafts and discs are inserted at each end and the whole assembly is supported at each end on the end brackets.

The fire curtain end plates are formed from 2.5mm plate depth of the plate is dependant on the overall height of the unit, the end plate has a formed motor compartment which will be packed with non combustible material.

The fire curtain is standard grey, the end plates, guides, hood etc., are powder coated RAL 9010 white as standard, other colours are available at an additional cost.

Our Fire rated shutters are typically installed with an induction motor, an electromagnetic brake, limit switches and a fusible link. The design provides a reliable system that will close the shutter automatically in the event of a fire situation. A controlled descent comes as an inbuilt safety feature. In the event of a power loss, manual operation can be attained. By releasing a pull cord close to the shutter under controlled descent and a hand chain to open again. Every fire shutter is individually operated from a control station, incorporating open/close/stop push-buttons positioned adjacent to the shutter guide. A 24-volt DC auto-reset solenoid is available for linking into the fire alarm or BMS.

As standard, the curtain is self-finished light grey with the perimeter intumescent seal in black.
